(tutorial) Maternity Jeans Conversion

I had a pair of jeans that were just too big.  I held on to them because I really liked them, and figured that I could just wear them as my 'fat jeans' after my babies, and at least enjoy them for a few weeks...months, whatever.  BUT, because I was seriously lacking in 'cute' maternity Jeans (I only have 1 pair that I loved, and can't wear them every day for 10 months, lets be honest) I thought I'd give a little conversion a whirl.
it worked!
Here's what I did...and can I tell you, I love them!
{ps, I'm more than a little bit embarrassed that I'm showing off every curve I've got...try not to cringe!}

The only thing I needed to buy was a 'BeBand' {the Target knock-off of a belly band, I think}  My research showed that these BeBands were awesome!

 1. Cut off just the waist band of your jeans.  NERVOUS, I know...but just do it!  The label was attached a little below the waist band, so I just used a seam ripper to unpick it, and it worked out.
These Jeans happened to have a really short zipper, which ended before the button attachment.  if your don't, that's OK, just zip-up your zipper, and cut off the button(s) anyway.
2.) Serge or ZigZag your raw edge.  I didn't have access to a serger, so I did it the rookie way...serging would've been my first choice
3.) Turn your BeBand inside out
4.) Insert your Jeans into your inside out BeBand...right sides together.
5.) Line up the front, back and two sides with the seams on your jeans and stick a pin in at each point.
6.) Sew a straight stitch, stretching your BeBand as you go.  I held on to each pin, and stitched until I got there, and then grabbed the next pin, and stretched again.
(you don't need to worry about using an elastic stitch, or using elastic thread for anything...your jeans to don't stretch anyways, so just stitch it right on!)
7.) Just make sure the edge of your BeBand is lined up exactly next to your zigged or serged edge of your jeans
8.) flip your BeBand right-side-out and top stitch right along your seam.  (I tried to make sure that my edges were pointed up toward the BeBand and were caught in my topstitch.
...and VOILA!
Here's my side-by-side comparison of my jeans to my citizen maternity jeans...my previous favorite pair of maternity jeans.  Why do I like my home-made ones better???
When I wear my citizens, I have to fold the stretchy part over as my pregnancy progresses because it starts to either give me a muffin top, or cuts off circulation.  embarrassing!  So, I fold it down, and then I'm wearing the lowest of low jeans!  hate that!
So, I LOVE these  Jeans...they sort of suck me in so I'm not hanging out all over the place, AND I don't have to worry about seeing the dreaded line of wear my pants end and my stomach begins.  There's no line.  So, I guess you have to decide if you like your maternity jeans to come all the way up to your bra...I do!
too much info?  sorry!

  1. It's like -25 C here, I was just thinking today that I wished my regular jeans went up to my bra ;) Very cute, I think the beband would work much better than my solution this past pregnancy, which was hacked up tshirt. Next time... next time!

  2. ok - first of all - can I say what a cute little bump you have?!! And IF ONLY MY BUTT WAS THAT SKINNY when I was pregnant. I needed not only a maternity conversion, but an extra panel down the back middle to increase with my hips! HA! This is a great tutorial, will help so many people!

  3. I used the bottom of a t-shirt to convert a skirt with my last pregnancy. It ended up being too big! And I wasn't small by any means! That kid was 9 1/2 lbs! I think if you don't like the panel up to your bra, you could probably cut the be-band in half and convert two pairs. Can you say "trip to the thrift store?" ;) Enjoy your cute pants!

  4. LOVE it!! You could add a Be Band to your old favorite pair and eliminate the lines :-) Great jeans...and, um, seriously? Cute little curves...no stress!!

  5. Thank you thank you thank you! For both of my pregnancies I have wished for cute preggo jeans. I have trouble finding ones that are long enough. I finally splurged on gap ones this last time around but at 70$ a pair it made me hurt. I'm so glad that for the next time around I can transform my regular jeans!!!!

  6. Congrats on the new little one and a great pair of maternity jeans! Hopefully I'll get to use this tutorial for myself one day. :) I'm pretty sure the one pair of maternity jeans that I liked fit better before six months and after having the baby.

  11. Awesome tutorial! Hopefully I will become pregnant again so that I can convert scrub pants this way! I'm so long legged and they don't make them in talls!

  12. Great idea! I tried adding panels into the waistband of jeans when I was pregnant. I think they're still lost in my crafting tubs with pins in it. Epic fail! Definitely doing this the next time around! Simple but effective!

  13. THANK YOU for this tutorial! I made myself a pair of preggo pants using this idea, and they turned out fabulous! I used a dance/swim stretch fabric instead of a BeBand and had great results.

  15. I will definitely have to remember this one! I hated wearing my maternity jeans! They were always slipping down and I hate that line at the top of the stretchy part. Great idea! I bet you could transform a lot of pants like this!

  16. 1) Awesome tutorial! Found you via Pinterest (what else?!)
    2) You look amazing in those. You are not allowed to call them your fat jeans. They are now your fab jeans. Because seriously, they are fabulous!

  17. I actually had some of these made with my favorite Joe's jeans back in 2010 when I was pregnant. I didn't see this in your post, but I thought I should mention that you should remove the zipper of the original pants! I didn't take out my zipper (I know it seems logical, but I was pregnant) and as my belly grew, the zipper part would poke me. I took them out and just sewed the pants together and they were marvelous!
